The Annual Fowey Royal Regatta And Carnival Week - The Fowey Royal Regatta is hailed by many as one of the best local regatta's in the country, the event is usually held in the 2 - 3rd week of August and is the busiest event of the year. The event has a real carnival atmosphere and is popular with locals and visitors alike.


2. The Daphne Du Maurier Festival - The Fowey based festival is a general arts and literature festival, held in memory of Dame Daphne du Maurier, who lived and wrote in the area. The annual festival always has a good mix of star names, guided walks, talks, drama and community events. The festival is one of the highlights of the Fowey calendar.


3. Polruan Blockhouse - On either side of the harbour entrance are the ruins of square blockhouses built around 1380, between which a chain was hung to prevent the entry of undesirable ships into the harbour. Polruan blockhouse is a prominent point at the harbour entrance and may be visited on foot. From there you can look across to the remains of the Fowey blockhouse which is not accessible to visitors.


4. St Catherine's Point sits on the Fowey side of the harbour entrance. In medieval times the chapel of St Catherine stood on the cliff top and a light was kept burning as a Lighthouse. Now all that remains is the fort below, built in the reign of Henry VIII to defend the harbour entrance. The fort, St Catherine's Castle, is accessible on foot from Readymoney Cove and entry is free.


5. The Lost Gardens Of Heligan - Distance from Fowey - 13.7 miles. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, situated near Mevagissey, form part of the Tremayne Estate and are one of the most successful botanical gardens in the UK. After decades of neglect following the Great War, the gardens were restored to their original gardenesque state. The 1996 restoration was televised by Channel 4 and revitalised the Estate and surrounding community. The Gardens boast a wide variety of trees and plants and have Europe's only remaining Pineapple Pit.


6. Fishing in Fowey is plentiful with a whole host of riverside and coastal locations to choose from there are plenty of opportunities to fish in the Fowey area. Local catches include mullet, bass, mackerel, lobsters and cuttlefish. Boats are available for hire or for guided trips and a great deal of the coastline and estuary offer good spots.

9. The Quiller-Couch Memorial-. Situated on the Hall Walk about 15 minutes from Bodinnick and overlooking Fowey, the monument stands at the top of Penleath Point at the mouth of Pont Creek. It is a memorial to the author Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch who made his home in Fowey and was an integral part of the local community.


10. Castle Dore sits about about 2 miles north of Fowey on the B3269. The remains of an old castle with a circular earth rampart nearly seven feet high, which can still be seen. Access is difficult with parking in a lay-by and walking on the main road.

12. Polruan - Distance from Fowey - 4.0 miles (By road)Polruan is situated opposite Fowey on the other side of the harbour. The town shares a similar maritime history and is a traditional Cornish fishing village with a proud ship-building heritage. Despite its proximity to Fowey, Polruan maintains its own identity and has a number of visitor attractions and events. These include historical landmarks such as the 18th century ruined church, St Saviours and the Blockhouse fortification, built in 1380 following an attack by Spanish raiders. Polruan also has its own Carnival, which is held in the week following Fowey's version.

20. Shipwreck Rescue & Heritage Centre - Distance from Fowey - 7.2 miles This museum is considered to be the largest exhibitor of shipwreck artefacts in Europe. Located in nearby Charlestown, the centre illustrates the town's history and maritime traditions and shows items from over 150 shipwrecks. The collection, which has taken 50 years to assemble, dates back to the early 18th century and includes sea diving bells, diving suits and artefacts from the Lusitania and Titanic. There's also a gift shop for souvenirs and a restaurant.


21. Cycling - Despite its hilly nature Cornwall, including the area around the Fowey Estuary, has much to offer cyclists. With both on and off road routes Cornwall's Clay Trails, which form part of the Cornish Way and National Cycle Network, offer the opportunity to explore the areas mining landscapes, routes that lead to the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. The nearest starting point to Fowey is at Par Beach, but you will also find that much of the Clay Trails are accessible by public transport. The Estuary is also within reach of the Camel Trail on the north Coast.


22. Fowey Lifeboat Station - Situated on Passage Street, the lifeboat shop opens during the summer months. Next door to the shop the inshore lifeboat is kept and on some days it is possible to have a closer look. You will also be able to see the all weather lifeboat on her mooring. It is worth looking out for lifeboat events that take place regularly throughout the summer as they often offer the oportunity to have a look onboard the lifeboats.

24. The Red Arrows perform their amazing air displays at the Annual Fowey Regatta in August every year and are one of the highlights of the annual event.

28. Fowey railway station - closed to passengers in 1965, the Lostwithiel to Fowey branch line remains open for goods traffic, carrying bulk china clay to the jetties at Carne Point. The nearest passenger station is at Par, whence there are trains to Penzance, Newquay, Plymouth, Bristol and london Paddington.


29. The Eden Project- Distance from Fowey - 6.7 miles The Eden Project is about 7 miles outside Fowey. It has three transparent domes that showcase over 100,000 plant species. They are designed to replicate a variety of different climates including tropical and Mediterranean - one of the domes is thought to be one of the largest green houses in the world. The Eden Project was intended as a means of bringing people closer to nature in order to increase their understanding of the environment. - Pirates, like smugglers, have a rather romantic image. Fowey Cornwall was home to several notorious pirates and John Mixstow, or Michaelstow, of Fowey was well known in the fifteenth century.


37. Tristan Stone - Distance from Fowey - 1 mile. Tristan Stone is a granite block that stands around 7 feet high and is located next to the main Fowey road. Orginally, next to Castle Dore, it has since been moved to Manabilly East Gate. On it are inscribed the Latin words, 'Drustanus Hic Iacit/Filius Cunomorus', which translates as 'Here lies Drustanus, son of Cunomorus'. The name Cunomorus likely refers to a king who resided at Castle Dore in the 6th century. Admission: Free | Opening times: No restrictions.

44. St Austell - Distance from Fowey - 8.6 miles. St Austell is a major market town, well-placed for touring mid-Cornwall. The one-time centre of the china-clay industry has a number of interesting historical buildings such as the Georgian Qauker Meeting House and the Italianate town hall, built in 1844. Holy Trinity Church is also worth seeing and includes intricate carvings on its outside walls. The pedestrianised town centre is currenlty undergoing a £75 million redevelopment which will add new shops, a cinema and restaurants.

Lostwithiel - Distance from Fowey - 9.1 miles Lostwithiel, which was the 13th century capital of Cornwall, is a picturesque market town, with attractive buildings such as the guildhall and old grammar school. It has a number of historic buildings such as a 15th century bridge and the remains of an old courthouse, The Stannery. Shopping is good in Lostwithiel with an array of fairs, antique/craft shops and market stalls open to visitors. There is also a number of award-winning restaurants and hotels dotted around the town.


52. Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre - In the Tourist Information 5 South Street, Fowey. The centre contains information about Fowey's literary connections with displays on Daphne du Maurier's life and works in particular. A video about Daphne du Maurier's connection with the area is available to watch on request. Open daily throughout the year it also houses the Tourist Information Centre.


53. Polperro - A small village with a picturesque harbour, from which fishing and trip boats come and go with the tide. Although vehicle access is restricted there is lots to explore in Polperro's narrow and winding streets. The main car park is situated at the top of the village.


54. Kenneth Grahame - Wind in the Willows author, Kenneth Greene also spent much time in Fowey. He first visited in 1899 to help his recovery from pneumonia and became friends with fellow writer, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch.

67. Fowey Parish Church - There have been followers of the Lord Jesus Christ here in Fowey since at least the early 7th century. Today there is a lively and vibrant community of Christians here who seek, in our turn, to be faithful to the Biblical message of the rule and rescue of the Lord Jesus Christ.

76. Par Sands - Situated West of Fowey, Par Sands is a wide beach that backs on to sand dunes - low-tide reveals a large swathe of sand. Swimming is relatively safe with a large shallow area that only gradually increases in depth. Dogs are allowed and there are refreshment facilities nearby.


77. Hall Walk - Considered by many to be one of the best walks in Cornwall, this four mile trail runs from Bodinnick to Polruan via Pont. It winds through National Trust countryside along the banks of the River Fowey and affords some fine coastal vistas. A number of benches are placed along the path for ramblers to take a break, and The Bodinnick Ferry can be taken from Polruan back to Fowey for those with tired feet.

83. Car Parking - The Main car park is at the top of the town with a steep walk down. A shuttle bus runs everyday during the summer and a limited service in the winter. This runs from the Main car park to the town centre and back. There are no specific facilities on the mini bus but the driver is willing to offer assistance. Blue Badge and vehicle licence exempt holders (disabled) are entitled to3 hours free parking. Blue Badge holders need to display their badge and a time clock. Any additional parking needs to be paid for at the appropriate tariff. Please always check the payment board when buying a ticket. Length of time is as follows Short Stay Car Parks (Town and Albert Quay) – 3 Hours Long Stay Car Parks (Main, Caffa Mill & Readymoney) – 6 hours.


84. Fowey Coastal Path - Coastal paths run from Fowey to Polruan and St Austell. Beyond Polruan, the coastal path runs from the afore mentioned Lantic Bay - the views from these trails are spectacular. Alternatively, it is possible to take a circular coastal route from Fowey to Polkerris and back again via the Saints Way. Its about a 10 mile walk so allow around 6 hours.
